Twisted Colossus Media Day Review

la-trb-twisted-colossus-pov-six-flags-magic-mountain-20141016-vTwisted Colossus, a Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) hybrid roller coaster opened for media the other day at Six Flags Magic Mountain. This ride designed by Allen Schilke sends riders up 121 feet in the air on this dueling racing monster. Twisted Colossus is the re-imagined coaster based on the original Colossus roller coaster only  instead of using wood track this coaster used a Iron Horse I Beam style track to twist riders in never before seen directions. This includes a first ever Top Gun Stall,  an inversion where one train is upside down in a zero g roll while the other train is below cresting an airtime hill, and the Western Hemisphere’s first ever High Five element, where two trains pass through an overbanked turn facing each other with the illusion that you can reach out and “high five” other riders. Their are also many airtime filled moments, sending you out of you seat 18 times. Parts of the original structure remain for the new ride as well.

Twisted Colossus, the next generation of the beloved wooden roller coaster that thrilled millions of guests in its 36-year reign at the park, will be a unique technological marvel combining an iconic wooden structure with state-of-the-art Iron Horse Track. The advanced technology, available exclusively at Six Flags, provides ride experiences never before possible on wooden coasters, such as over-banked turns and inversions. Twisted Colossus will feature numerous exciting components including a “Top Gun” element, the western hemisphere’s first “High Five” element, and a Zero G Roll.

Kings Dominion & Busch Gardens Partner on Ticket Offer

kdbgBusch Gardens and Kings Dominion Proclaim Region

Virginia’s Gateway to Family Thrills

Partnership is the first in 15 years between the two theme parks

RICHMOND, VA (May 5, 2015) – Virginia’s two largest theme parks are celebrating 40 years as the commonwealth’s premier family entertainment venues. To mark the occasion, the parks are joining forces this summer to raise awareness of Virginia’s Gateway to Family Thrills, the 75-mile corridor connecting Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens®.

Busch Gardens’ Marketing Vice President Dan Dipiazzo and Scott Clemons, director of marketing for Kings Dominion, announced the partnership today during a joint news conference held on the State Capitol grounds. The partnership is the first between the two theme parks in nearly 15 years. It was made possible in part because of a $25,000 matching grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation, and includes a digital advertising component as well as a combined ticket offer so guests can experience both theme parks at a reduced price.

The parks developed two ticket deals to support the Gateway to Family Thrills promotion.

  • The Virginia Thrills Ticket costs $106 and is valid for one single-day admission each to Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion within seven consecutive days. The promotion represents a $34 savings off the combined retail ticket prices to the parks.
  • The Virginia Thrills Ticket Plus costs $135 and adds each venue’s water parks to the package. The Virginia Thrills Ticket Plus is valid for two single-day admission tickets to Busch Gardens and/or Water Country USA® and two single-day admission tickets to Kings Dominion and/or Soak City within seven consecutive days. The promotional price represents a $121 savings off the parks’ combined retail single-day admission prices.

“This partnership highlights the friendly competition between Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion, and brings our resources together to create a much larger voice in a crowded market,” Dipiazzo said. “Why drive a thousand or more miles for a vacation when we have Orlando-quality attractions right here in Virginia.”

The two parks individually offer an assortment of rides, shows and family-friendly entertainment. Combining their resources lets the parks, the state and local tourism boards representing Richmond and Williamsburg to reach out to families living in the Northeast who may be unaware of what is available to them just a few hours down the road.

“We are both going after similar guests,” Clemons said. “Joining together, Virginia’s premier theme parks offer an attractive option for families who want a thrilling vacation closer to home.”

The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance and Richmond Region Tourism are also participating in the partnership, which further extends the advertising resources available in the affluent Northeast markets of Philadelphia and New York.

“This is an unprecedented partnership between two of Virginia’s best entertainment options,” said Rita McClenny, president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “The friendly competition between Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion has created two world-class theme parks. Combining their resources with the state’s grant program, creates a unique opportunity to market the corridor from Richmond to Williamsburg to families who may not otherwise consider Virginia as a thrill vacation destination.”

Large Fight Breaks out at Kennywood

Kwd A horrible and unfortunate event took place at Kennywood in West Mifflin, PA last Saturday night. A large fight broke out involving 50 to 100 teenagers from local Pittsburgh schools. Kennywood opened to the public this day and also had several schools come and celebrate the ending of the school year.  The fight took place in the Kiddyland section of the park, and officials and law officers were quickly called to the park to help manage the crowd. The unruly guests were then escorted out of the park. Unfortunately four female visitors were injured during the confrontation.  Kennywood will reopen next Saturday on May 9th. Kennywood released a statement on their Facebook page which can be read below.

We understand there is some concern about what happened at the park Saturday evening. Please know that the first and foremost priority of those of us at Kennywood is providing a safe, family-friendly atmosphere for our guests. It is for that reason that Kennywood security personnel requested extra assistance from some of the police departments in our neighboring communities when we recognized several large groups of teenaged guests acting in an unruly fashion. It is important to note that claims of riots are an exaggeration; only four injuries were reported to Kennywood security, all of which were minor in nature. No property was damaged either.

We apologize to any and all whose evening was disrupted by this incident. We will review our measures to ensure safety and security and make any changes if determined necessary.

Kennywood will resume operations as scheduled on Saturday, May 9.

SeaWorld Debuts New Show “Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High”

sealionsSeaWorld Orlando debuted their new Sea Lion show today. Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High opened to great success at Sea lion and Otter Stadium. The new show like Clyde & Seamore Take Pirate Island, uses humor to excite guests of all ages, however instead of pirates this show has a school theme and supports teachers. The new pre-show honors teachers and explains how the animals are trained. SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas will debut the show in May. SeaWorld sent us a press release and it is below.

ORLANDO, Fla. (April 16, 2015) –  The all-new sea lion comedy adventure “Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High” is now open at SeaWorld Orlando.  Full of fun and big personalities of sea lions, walruses and otters, the show takes place in an aquatic-themed  high school where laughter and education go hand in hand (er, flipper).

A special new pre-show salutes teachers from all over, and guests learn new information about the animal stars, their relationships with the trainers, and how the animals are trained.

True to the more than 40-year legacy of SeaWorld’s beloved sea lion shows, Sea Lion High is an entertaining and fun comedy that is a perfect fit for sea lions’ large personalities. Through the adventures, laughs and endearing animal antics, guests are inspired to care about these amazing animals.

When Clyde and Seamore are nominated to win scholarships to Ocean University, they must enter crash courses in science, dance and gym in a storyline that is full of fast-paced fun.  Also woven into the comedy are moments that subtly teach lessons such as the importance of keeping our oceans healthy.

Sea Lion High features a new, two-story set that is the marine mammal high school, complete with sea lion-sized waterslides and elevators for otters. SeaWorld’s animal stars and trainers have also worked together to put together amazing new behaviors.

“We love creating a show like ‘Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High’,” said Kelly Flaherty Clark, curator of animal training.  “Finding entertaining ways to encourage guests to care about these animals is what we do, and this show does it in a way that makes you smile and laugh.”

The creative process to produce a show like “Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High” is highly collaborative between animal trainers and the group of writers and directors. In fact, the process always starts with the animals.  We watch interactions and relationship sessions with them and their trainers, looking for unique ways to highlight their natural abilities.

“The show takes our guests on a journey where they’ll learn about celebrating, connecting and caring for the natural world,” said Michael Fletcher, SeaWorld Orlando’s vice president of entertainment. “But this is a Clyde and Seamore production, and that means it’ll be hilarious and zany.”

The best way to experience “Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High” and all that SeaWorld has to offer is with a 2015 SeaWorld Orlando Fun Card, where guests pay for a day and play all year.  Plus, for a limited-time, guests who purchase a Fun Card can also enjoy a one-day visit to Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark.

Six Flags Over Georgia Construction Update

SFOG_Joker_LOGO_4CThis weekend In The Loop was able to stop by Six Flags Over Georgia to check out their construction projects going on in Gotham City. Six Flags is adding two new attractions to their Gotham line up in 2015. First The Joker Chaos Coaster, a 7 Story Larson looper built by Larson International. Riders will flip upside down, experiencing insanity, traveling both forwards and backwards during the ride.  Harley Quinn Spinsanity is the second addition to the Gotham City area. Harley Quinn is a tilt – a – whirl designed for the whole family to spin together. Seven cars rotate around the circular track, spinning in all kinds of directions.

As you can see from the video not much construction is going on. The track for The Joker Larson Looper are on site and could be going vertical any day now.
